Rome, Napels and Pompeii Day Twenty-two

Day 22

I woke up at 6am this morning to get ready to go on a tour of Napels and Pompeii. Pompeii is somewhere I have always wanted to see. So I am really excited to tick this off my bucket list. Where I was located the Green Line Tour office was about a 15 minutes walk away. I snacked on one of the bananas that I had brought the day before for breakfast as I headed out in the rain to find where the tour company was located. When I left the hotel room I realised that it was pouring with rain. This was going to make Pompeii really fun.

I walked for about ten minutes and I couldn't find where the street was that the company was located on. Standing in the pouring rain a taxi pulled up and asked me if he could help. I gave him the address and we were on our way. I was in the cab for about 2minutes not even that and we were at the address. He told me that was 5euros. What a rip off. 5euros for a 2 minute trip. I said thank you and he said "How about a kiss?" .... I stared at him for a second to see if he was joking and he was serious. I looked at him dead in the eye and said "No way." And I jumped out of the car as quickly as I could.

I couldn't believe how forward this cab driver was. I found the my tour bus and jumped on it. I was actually surprised how full the bus was. And I even got there early.  Once the bus started to drive the tour guide went through today's itinerary and it was a long one.

1.5 hours until our first rest room stop
driving tour of Napels
coral factory (surprise tour)
3 course lunch which was included
Pompeii tour
Return to Rome

We drove for 1.5 hours until they pulled up at a small cafe rest stop which it seams that a lot of other coaches and buses also used. We had a 20minute toilet and snack break and then we were back on the bus. Another 1.5 hours went passed until we got to Napels.

                                      Shoreline Napels

We stopped at the shore line and got some photos. It was such an overcast day that it wasn't very impressive. But if the day was clear it would of been beautiful. We didn't take pictures for long and we were straight back on the bus for our 20minute driving tour of Napels. We picked up the tour guide at the shoreline who would be giving us a tour of Pompeii. He was no joke 88 years old and such a funny man.

                                  Napels

After our small tour of Napels by bus we then were taken to a Coral factory where the made and sold coral jewerly. There was only one lady on the tour that was interested. They surprised us with this visit and not many of the guests on the bus were impressed at all. I used the stop as an opportunity to go to the toilet. Me and 3 other ladies went into the toilets but they had no lights. So all of us used our phones lights when we were in these pitch black toilet. It wouldn't surprise me if the your company got a commission from the sales from the tour group. We then got back on the bus it took another 30mins to get to Pompeii.

The drive was pretty impressive and beautiful. When we got to Pompeii we were taken to a small restaurant for a 3 course lunch. I let the know I am a celiac and we got gluten free pasta to start, veal for mains and fresh fruit for dessert. It was quite nice but we were there having lunch for over a hour and a half and we hadn't even seen Pompeii yet considering we left Rome at 7:30am. At 3pm we finally started our tour of Pompeii. The tour guide got us some head phones so we could all hear him and we were on our way.

The actual tour itself lasted about an hour. But was very informative and impressive. The tour guide had a lot of information. We saw the red light district of Pompeii including a brothel. And on the old roads of Pompeii they had Penis's carved into them pointing residents to the red light district.

                                        Penis on the road

We got to go into an old house that was still standing. This house was so impressive and huge. It was great to be able to get a sense of how they lived before.

We saw some people and animals who didn't make it out in time. There was a person with there hands over there face. It's was just really surreal.

We also saw there theatre and day spa baths.

At the end of the tour the guide said thank you for coming along there is so much you still have got to see so you will have to come back and see it next time. I was fuming. I had spent about 7 hours traveling and eating and coral shopping to be told that I have to come back to see the rest. I didn't have time to see the rest this trip. I think the Pompeii section was pretty poorly done. They should of disclosed that we would only have an hour and would t see everything. If I knew that I would of made the trip down myself.

All in all I did really like visiting Pompeii and being able to learn about there past. We then jumped back on the bus and went back to Rome. For a 13 hour day trip I was pretty unimpressed with the amount of time we spent seeing the actual site. But I'm still glad that I got to do it though. When we got back to Rome they dropped us off in groups by our hotels. They missed my hotel and dropped me back at the centre. Being night time it was a bit harder to find my hotel. Since this morning I got lost in day light.

A could of wrong turns and a couple of right turns I ended up back at my hotel. I went and had dinner at a restraint. Yes, I had pasta. I just can't get enough of it over here. It's highly likely this won't be my last serving of it either. Yum!!!!

The end of the day I enjoyed seeing Pompeii but I didn't enjoy seeing them with greenline tours. I felt like it was a waste of a day. If you are looking at seeing Pompeii and going from Rome I would highly recommend asking how long the tour of Pompeii is and maybe not see Napels and just do a Pompeii tour. Pompeii is definitely worth seeing. Also if you do Pompeii by your self you can hire audio guides and you get maps.
